Derived from thinkmakebuild, a custom builder in the Mid-Atlantic Region, OnBudget was created by founder, Darren Kornas and Office Manager, Debbie Beatty. They recognized how thinkmakebuild’s bookkeeping system could help construction companies get control of their finances without the use of complicated software or massive amounts of confusing data. Sometimes simple is best.
Like many firms, thinkmakebuild began with the owner wearing the toolbags and every other hat that it takes to run a company. And, like many young firms, the bookkeeping was usually the last thing to be paid attention to. Realizing this lack of financial organization was the death knell of many construction companies, the need for a full-time bookkeeper became critical.
However, in the search for bookkeepers it became apparent that a large majority of accounting/bookkeeping companies did not understand construction, and trying to constantly explain the construction process became tiresome. Hiring a bookkeeper intimately familiar with the construction industry was key to the company’s success. This knowledge, combined with systems that provided critical, easy-to-understand data, allowed thinkmakebuild to grow into one of the leading custom builders in its market, operating in 6 states with the owner and staff working remotely.
